A man has been charged after a retired OPP officer was robbed Tuesday in downtown Orillia.

Neil Hurtubise, 87, had $700 snatched from his hand as he was exiting the TD bank on Peter Street.

On Thursday, Orillia OPP announced they had arrested Clayton Loftus, 40, of Orillia, and charged him with theft under $5,000. He was set to appear in Orillia court Thursday.

Police provided the following tips for those using automated teller machines.

  • Stay in well-lit areas.
  • Put cash, cards and receipts away immediately. Count money later, and always keep the receipt.
  • If you see anyone or anything suspicious, cancel your transaction and leave immediately. If anyone follows you after making a transaction, go to a crowded, well-lit area and call 911.
  • If you exit your vehicle to use an ATM, lock your doors. When walking back, have your keys in hand so you can re-enter your vehicle quickly.
