Man locked himself in dump truck while trying to steal it: police

Employees on the site had blocked in the truck before police arrived; 50-year-old facing multiple charges

Members of the Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) located and arrested a male after a report that he was attempting to steal a dump truck.

On July 6, 2023, around 1:15 p.m., Huronia West OPP officers responded to a call for a stolen vehicle in progress on River Road West in the Town of Wasaga Beach.

Police arrived on the scene of the construction site and located the suspect who had locked himself in the cab of the running dump truck. He was burning the tires and trying to escape.

Prior to police arriving, fast-acting employees that were on site already calling the police had blocked in the dump truck that also had a large trailer that was holding a skid steer and an excavator.

Initially, the male was not compliant with police, however shortly after he was arrested without incident.

As a result, a 50-year-old Wasaga Beach resident was charged with:

  • Theft over $5,000 of a motor vehicle
  • Fail to comply with probation order
  • Resist peace officer
  • Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code

The accused was held pending a bail hearing to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie.
