GEORGIAN BAY TOWNSHIP, ON - Members of snowmobile patrol unit attached to the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were dispatched at 11:55 p.m. Feb. 2, 2018 to a report of a snowmobile crash in the area of South Bay, Georgian Bay Township.
Attending OPP officers, Georgian Bay Township Fire Service and Simcoe County Paramedic Services attended a nearby land based address and the scene was located on the west side of South Bay where the Ontario Federation Of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) trail 19 and 16 transitions from the ice surface to a land trail.
The OPP officers located the lone injured male driver at a cottage and due to the remoteness of the location transported emergency services personnel to the cottage to initially treat the male. The officers then transported the injured male in a rescue sled obtained from a nearby marina to an awaiting ambulance. The male was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment of his serious injuries sustained in the crash.
A 27-year-old male from Kitchener has been charged with Careless Operation contrary to section 15 of the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act. Investigators are pointing to operating at a speed greater than conditions allowed and unfamiliarity with the area as contributing factors in this crash.
