Barrie police are investigating an assault which took place near Barrie's Spirit Catcher Saturday night.

Police are looking for five suspects, dressed in black and wearing medical masks, after an assault involving wooden bats near Barrie’s Spirit Catcher Saturday night.

It took place just before 9 p.m. and the male victim was transported by ambulance to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH).

“We’d call the injuries serious in nature,” said Peter Leon, Barrie Police Service corporate communications co-ordinator. “There were at least four individuals that were involved in the assault and there was one who was possibly observing.

“Four of the five suspects had wooden bats.”

Police said they all fled the scene in a small, grey coloured Honda Civic, toward Bradford Street.

Leon said the assault was fairly quick from all indications.

“It wasn’t a prolonged incident, but long enough that they were able to inflict some injury upon the victim,” he said.

Leon also said the location at which it happened was unfortunate.

“It’s a unique piece of property obviously,” he said. “There is a parking lot adjacent to the Spirit Cather area, but that’s a piece of land in Barrie that has special meaning and we certainly don’t want it marred by occurrences like this.”

Barrie police seek witnesses or dash cam footage from the incident. Anyone with information can call Det.-Const. Jason Minke at 705-725-7025 ext. 2777.
