OPP charge 4 local drivers with impaired in separate weekend incidents

Vehicle in ditch, minor collision, and reports from public lead police to suspects

The Orillia detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police arrested and charged four people with impaired driving in separate incidents over the weekend.

In the first incident, on Saturday shortly before 8:15 p.m., police were dispatched to a report a of vehicle in the ditch in the north end of Orillia.

Upon arrival, officers determined the driver was impaired, according to an OPP news release.

The driver was arrested for impaired driving and transported to the detachment for further investigation by a drug recognition expert. 

As a result, Rachel Young, 26, of Orillia has been charged with operation while impaired- alcohol and drugs.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia on Feb. 27.

The driver's vehicle was impounded for seven days and they were issued a 90-day licence suspension, police said.

On Sunday at around 2:55 p.m., officers were advised that an offender currently on a conditional sentence order was breaching their conditions. 

Police were able to locate the male driver and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. 

Police said the driver refused to stop but was arrested a short distance away in front of a private residence.

Sukhvir Sandhar, 39, of Orillia has been charged with:

  • Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Flight From Peace Officer
  • Dangerous Operation
  • Breach of Conditional Sentence Order

The accused was held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia on Feb. 5.

The driver's vehicle was impounded for seven days and they were issued a 90-day driver's licence suspension.

In a second incident on Sunday, shortly after 5:15 p.m., the OPP responded to a call for a possible impaired driver on Highway 11 in Oro Medonte. 

The vehicle was later located in Orillia and the driver was arrested for impaired driving, police said.

Steven Espinozsa, 46, of Orillia has been charged with:

  • Operation while Impaired- Alcohol and Drugs
  • Operation While Impaired- Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)

The driver's vehicle was impounded for 45 days and they were issued a 90-day driver's licence suspension.

Also on Sunday, shortly after 5:30 p.m., Orillia OPP responded to a minor collision at a business on Highway 12 in Oro-Medonte.

Officers determined the driver of one of the involved vehicles was impaired. They were subsequently arrested and transported to the Orillia detachment for further investigation.

As a result, Scott Caroline, 41, of Oro-Medonte has been charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired- Alcohol and Drugs
  • Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand

The accused was released on undertaking to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia on Feb. 27.

The driver's vehicle has been impounded for seven days and they were issued a 90-day licence suspension, police said.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and all of the accused are considered innocent unless proven guilty.
