OPP nab two suspects after armed robbery at Atherley Road business

On Monday, Oct. 5, 2020, shortly after 11 p.m., members of the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a robbery with a firearm outside of a business on Atherley Road in the City of Orillia. 

It was reported that a female was told to hand over her money and phone by a female suspect and that a male suspect had pointed a handgun and threatened the victim.

Upon arrival, officers learned that the suspects had fled in a black car. The area was patrolled extensively by police but the vehicle was not located at that time. 

The investigation was continued by the Orillia OPP Crime Unit with the assistance of members of the Southern Georgian Bay OPP detachment and Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), Regional Support Team (RST), Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU). As a result, the suspects were identified and were subsequently located and arrested in Port McNicoll, in the Township of Tay.

As a result of the investigation, police seized a replica Glock 17 firearm and two prohibited knives, one doubling as 'brass knuckles.'

Riley Carpentier, age 18, of Midland has been charged with:

  • Robbery using firearm (restricted or prohibited), contrary to Section 344(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Robbery with violence, contrary to Section 343(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Two counts of possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, contrary to Section 88 of the Criminal Code
  • Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm, contrary to Section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Three counts of failure to comply with undertaking, contrary to Section 145(4)(a) of the Criminal Code

Taylor Schulze, age 18, of Tay Township has been charged with:

  • Robbery using firearm (restricted or prohibited), contrary to Section 344(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Robbery with violence, contrary to Section 343(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm, contrary to Section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

Both accused parties have been held in custody for a bail hearing and are set to appear on Oct. 9, 2020 at the Ontario Court of Justice, Barrie.
