An Orillia man is in hot water with the police after being stopped in Tay Township.

A patrol officer with the Southern Georgian Bay OPP was alerted to a suspended driver thanks to the OPP's on-board automated licence place recognition technology.

The vehicle was stopped on Jan. 6 at about 3 p.m. on Highway 93 near Darby Road. After stopping the vehicle, the officer entered into an investigation resulting in the driver being charged with multiple offences, according to a media release.

Police say George Piche, 71, has been charged criminally with the offence of operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code.

He was also charged with driving a motor vehicle with no licence, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act, driving with an open container of liquor and driving with liquor readily available contrary to the Liquor Licence and Control Act.

Police say he was also charged with driving with cannabis readily available along with having care or control of a vehicle with cannabis in open baggage contrary to the Cannabis Control Act.

The accused will answer his charges at the Ontario Court of Justice on Jan. 25, 2024. His vehicle was towed away and impounded, police note.
