Orillia man, woman arrested after sporting goods heist

In addition to possession of stolen property charges, both suspects are facing drug trafficking and weapons charges following Street Crime Unit probe

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have made two arrests as a result of a break and enter investigation in the City of Orillia.

On Sept. 11, 2020, shortly after 10 p.m., a Front Street business was broken into and over $11,000 of sports equipment was stolen. Members of the Orillia detachment of the OPP attended but the suspect had fled the scene prior to police arrival. 

The investigation was continued by the Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) and on Oct. 9, 2020, just before noon, a search warrant was executed at a Gill Street residence. A male and female were arrested and some of the stolen equipment was recovered along with a quantity of cocaine, other drugs and ammunition.

As a result, Keith Wood, age 27, of Orillia has been charged with:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, contrary to Section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - cocaine, contrary to Section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Two counts of possession of a Schedule I Substance - other drugs, contrary to Section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, contrary to Section 86(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order, contrary to Section 117.01(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code

In addition, Ashlee Rusby, age 26, of Orillia has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - other drugs, contrary to Section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, contrary to Section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, contrary to Section 86(1) of the Criminal Code

Both accused parties were released on Form 10 Undertakings and are set to appear on Nov. 17, 2020 at the Ontario Court of Justice, Orillia.
