Orillia OPP issued 40 tickets last month in response to complaints about noisy vehicles.

Throughout August, police targeted vehicles with “excessively loud mufflers and exhaust systems, including aftermarket exhausts and vehicles that cause unreasonable amounts of smoke,” according to a news release.

Forty provincial offences notices were issued for excessive noise and vehicle equipment infractions, and 67 drivers received warnings.

“Drivers are reminded that it is their responsibility to ensure their exhaust system meets the requirements of provincial laws including the Highway Traffic Act,” the release stated. “This includes the exhaust being in good working order, with no excessive noise, or unreasonable amount of smoke. Furthermore, the driver shall not at any time cause the motor vehicle to make any unnecessary noise, nor permit any unreasonable amount of smoke to escape from the motor vehicle.”

Police noted motor vehicles and motorized bicycles must have proper mufflers that are in good working order and cannot have muffler cut-outs, straight exhausts, gutted mufflers, Hollywood mufflers, and bypasses or similar devices as per Section 75 of the Highway Traffic Act.
