Orillia OPP nab five impaired drivers in two days

Four of the drivers were involved in single-vehicle collisions, say police

Members of the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged five drivers with impaired driving, four of which were involved in a collision, between March 11 and 13, 2022. 

On March 11, 2022, at approximately 1:15 a.m., Orillia OPP stopped a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed while conducting speed enforcement on Highway 11 northbound in Severn Township.

As a result of the investigation, a 17-year-old from Ramara Township, has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) (YP 12-17criminal offence), Criminal Code (CC) 320.14(1)(b)
  • Race a motor vehicle- Stunt (YP 12-17 criminal offence), Highway Traffic Act (HTA) 172(1)
  • Novice driver - B.A.C. above zero (YP 12-17 criminal offence), HTA 44.1(3)
  • Person under 19 years having liquor (YP 12-17 criminal offence), Liquor Licence and Control Act (LLCA) 34(1)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia, at a later date.

On March 12, 2022, at approximately 1:03 a.m., Orillia OPP responded to a single motor vehicle colliding into a hydro pole on Highway 11 southbound at Line 1, in Oro-Medonte.

As a result of the investigation, Jordan Harrington, 22, of Orillia, has been charged with:

  • Adult Dangerous Operation, Criminal Code (CC) s.320.13(1)
  • Operation of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 milligrams, CC s. 320.14(1)(b)
  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, CC s. 320.14(1)(a)
  • Adult Drive Motor Vehicle - No licence, contrary to Highway Traffic Act (HTA) s. 32(1)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia, on March 29, 2022.

Later that day, at approximately 9:29 p.m., Orillia OPP responded to another single motor vehicle collision, where the vehicle struck a tree on Memorial Avenue in the City of Orillia.

As a result of the investigation, Nathan Burke, 23, of Orillia, has been charged contrary to the Criminal Code (CC) with:

  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, CC s. 320.14(1)(a)
  • Operation of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 milligrams, CC s. 320.14(1)(b)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia, on April 5, 2022.

On March 13, 2022, at approximately 11:53 a.m., Orillia OPP responded to a single motor vehicle rollover collision in Ramara Township.

As a result of the investigation, Scott Smallwood, 45, of Eldon Township, has been charged with:

  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, Criminal Code (CC) s. 320.14(1)(a)
  • Operation of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 milligrams, CC s. 320.14(1)(b)
  • Driving while under suspension (Adult), Highway Traffic Act (HTA) 53(1)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia, on April 19, 2022.

On March 13, 2022, at approximately 9:52 p.m., Orillia OPP responded to a single motor vehicle collision, where the vehicle collided into a trailer on West Street North in the City of Orillia.

As a result of the investigation, Michael Squires, 43, of Severn Township, has been charged contrary to the Criminal Code (CC) with:

  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, CC s. 320.14(1)(a)
  • Operation of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 milligrams, CC s. 320.14(1)(b)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia, on April 12, 2022.
