Police find 'explosive-type material' on Penetanguishene trail

There was a considerable police presence on Robert Street East in Penetanguishene today.

Police have confirmed “explosive-type material” was found Friday on a walking trail near Brock and Robert streets in Penetanguishene.

Southern Georgian Bay OPP responded to the scene at 9:45 a.m.

“The on-scene investigation proved that found property was in fact some aged explosive-type material that had been exposed to the elements and had been there for a significant length of time,” police said in a news release. 

“The found items were safely removed from the scene by OPP specialty units and an investigation continues with their assistance.”

There had been a considerable police presence in Penetanguishene along Robert Street East at Brock Street which resulted in the closure of the walking trail.

Police had asked the public to stay clear of the area.
