Warrants executed in Kawartha Lakes lead to charges against three people

Three people are facing charges after police seized more than $6 million in illegal cannabis products in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

Search warrants were executed April 21 on three residential properties and two vehicles. As a result, police seized 470 kilograms of processed cannabis, 100 kilograms of hash, 80 kilograms of cannabis resin, 100 kilograms of cannabis edibles, seven kilograms of cannabis shatter, 80 kilograms of cannabis distillate and 700 grams psilocybin.

The OPP’s Provincial Asset Forfeiture Unit took part in the investigation and seized three vehicles as “offence-related property” valued at $75,000, as well as about $400,000 in Canadian currency, Kawartha Lakes OPP stated in a news release.

Thomas Kurely, 60, of Omemee, has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession for the purpose of distributing, possessing cannabis for the purpose of selling, altering or offering to alter the chemical or physical properties of cannabis by the use of an organic solvent, and possessing, producing, selling, distributing or importing anything with intention to use it to produce, sell or distribute illicit cannabis.

Kabilan Anura, 26, of Bolton, is charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession for the purpose of distributing, possessing cannabis for the purpose of selling, altering or offering to alter the chemical or physical properties of cannabis by the use of an organic solvent, possessing, producing, selling, distributing or importing anything with intention to use it to produce, sell or distribute illicit cannabis, and possession of a Schedule 2 substance for the purpose of trafficking.

A 27-year-old from Claremont was charged with possessing cannabis for the purpose of selling and possession for the purpose of distributing. Those charges were later withdrawn.

The accused are set to appear at an Ontario Court of Justice in Oshawa on May 19.

Also involved in the investigation were the OPP-led Provincial Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team, City of Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough Community Street Crime Units, Emergency Response Team, Canine Unit, and Durham Regional Police Service.
