Police seize prohibited weapons after traffic stop; two charged

OPP pulled over a vehicle early Sunday morning to investigate a possible Highway Traffic Act infraction and discovered a number of 'edged weapons'

Two people are facing charges after police seized a number of edged weapons in Midland over the weekend.

Ontario Provincial Police say just after 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, officers pulled over a vehicle on Simcoe County Road 93 near Lanigan Drive to investigate a possible Highway Traffic Act infraction.

“During the course of the investigation a number of edged weapons were seized, some being classified as prohibited weapons,” OPP said in a news release.

Police say 44-year-old Taras Popovitch of Penetanguishene was driving the vehicle and has been charged with:

  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon at an unauthorized place

And also the following under the Highway Traffic Act:

  • Driving while under suspension
  • Driving with no licence
  • Failure to surrender insurance slip
  • Obstructing a licence plate

A passenger of the vehicle, Patricia Jadwiga Dawid 38, of Penetanguishene has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Both are scheduled to appear in court on June 6.
