SIU called in after Barrie man injured while fleeing from police

ESSA TWP - On April 12, 2020 members of the Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to investigate a suspicious vehicle near Burwick Crescent in Essa Township. 

Police attempted to stop a pickup truck in the area similar to one described by witnesses. The driver of the vehicle (allegedly) refused to stop and attempted to evade officers.

OPP members from Huronia West Detachment also attempted to stop the fleeing vehicle when the suspect lost control and collided with a light standard at George Johnston Road and Highway 26. 

The driver received non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was treated at an area hospital.

A 24-year-old man from Barrie, Ont., has been charged with:

  • Flight from a peace officer
  • Impaired driving
  • Prohibited driving
  • Theft of vehicle
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Fail to comply with probation order

The accused remains in police custody pending a show cause hearing. The investigation remains ongoing. 

The OPP has notified the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and they have invoked their mandate. As a result, the OPP will not be able to provide any further information. Any inquiries should be directed to SIU Communications at 1-800-787-8529.
