The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has terminated its probe after a woman was injured when she "dropped" from a second-storey window in Barrie last winter.

The 22-year-old woman suffered a broken jaw and a fractured pelvis in the fall while trying to evade Barrie police in March, according to the SIU.

On Thursday, SIU director Joseph Martino announced the investigation has been closed.

Based on the SIU’s preliminary investigation, including a review of video footage that captured some of the events, officers responded to a call about a domestic disturbance at a Burns Circle apartment on March 26, 2023, near Livingstone Street West and Ferndale Drive North.

"The woman was with her estranged boyfriend in his residence in violation of a non-association order," stated a release from the SIU. "On hearing police were there, she escaped out the second-floor (window), suffering several fractures in the process."

She was eventually located by a police dog.

"On this record, it was evident that the police did nothing that could conceivably attract criminal sanction in connection with the woman’s serious injuries. As such, the SIU was without statutory jurisdiction to investigate," stated the release.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates police activity that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.
