The death of a 35-year-old man in Barrie on Saturday afternoon is being investigated by the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

At approximately 12:10 p.m. on Feb. 4, 2023, a woman fled from a vehicle in Barrie’s east end and contacted city police.

The vehicle left the scene.

Barrie police officers were able to track the vehicle.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., in the area of Kempenfelt Drive and Nelson Square, officers made visual and verbal contact with the man.

Officers initiated brief negotiations with the man, the SIU said.

Shortly afterwards, the man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Two SIU investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is asking anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: .
