'Swerving' vehicle pulled over; area driver facing charges: OPP

A vehicle, driven by 57-year-old, was observed by officer exhibiting 'inconsistent speeds and swerving from shoulder to centre line' on Highway 11

A driver from Tiny Township is facing charges after a vehicle being driven erratically was pulled over by OPP in northern Ontario.

According to the James Bay detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, the officer-initiated traffic stop led to charges for impaired driving and having open liquor and cannabis readily available in the vehicle.

The incident took place Sunday shortly after 4 p.m., when the officer observed a vehicle with "inconsistent speeds and swerving from shoulder to centre line" on Highway 11 northwest of Timmins, according to an OPP news release.

A traffic stop was conducted and it was determined the driver had been consuming alcohol, police say.

The driver was arrested and transported to the Cochrane OPP detachment for further testing.

Monique Laurin, 57, of Tiny Township, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Drive vehicle with cannabis readily available
  • Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cochrane on April 23.

The accused was also issued a 90-day driver's licence suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Laurin is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
