Weed smell wafting from car leads to drug, weapon charges

Officers seized 'large quantity' of suspected fentanyl, coke and meth, as well as loaded handgun

Barrie police say officers seized drugs and weapons after investigating a vehicle parked on North Street, Saturday morning.

Four males from Toronto — between the ages of 17 and 22 — face a long list of charges after Barrie police seized weapons and drugs early Saturday morning.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 20, officers noticed a vehicle parked on North Street — near Grove and Owen streets in downtown Barrie —  with four male occupants seated inside.

"As the officers approached the car, the odour of cannabis was detected emanating from it and police immediately commenced an investigation," police said in a news release. 

While conducting a vehicle search, police say a "large quantity" of suspected fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamine was located.

All four males were placed under arrest for possession of a Schedule I substance, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

As the suspects were being taken into custody and searched, police say of the one of the males was found to be in possession of a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun. Also located was a large quantity of Canadian currency.

The suspects, all of whom are from Toronto and range in age from 17 to 22 years old, were transported to Barrie Police Headquarters on Fairview Road where the investigation continued well into the early morning hours.

Police say investigators were also able to confirm that the firearm was stolen.

All four males were held for a bail hearing and have been jointly charged with:

  • Possession CDSA Schedule I (cocaine)
  • Possession CDSA Schedule I (methamphetamine)
  • Possession CDSA Schedule I (opioid other than heroin)
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine)
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking (methamphetamine)
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking (opioid other than heroin)
  • Possession weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000

None of the allegations have been tested in court.
