A woman will be in court next month to answer to assault charges after allegedly attacking three people, including a police officer, in downtown Orillia.

At about 7:20 p.m. on Sept. 18, police responded to the report of an assault on Mississaga Street, near Andrew Street.

When police arrived, they came upon a second assault in progress, said Orillia OPP Const. Ted Dongelmans. Police arrested the woman, who then allegedly assaulted an officer.

The initial call was in regard to an assault on a Downtown Orillia Management Board (DOMB) employee, which happened during the See You on the Patio event.

Citing privacy, the DOMB would not provide specific details of the incident or of the employee’s injuries, but the board did release the following statement:

“We are deeply concerned by the incident and our priority is supporting our staff member in their recovery and we are actively supporting the OPP as the investigation continues. We believe it is an isolated incident but as always, we are committed to working with our partners at the City of Orillia and Orillia OPP to ensure everyone has an enjoyable and safe shopping experience.”

The incident came on the heels of the DOMB requesting more police presence downtown.

Dongelmans noted police were conducting foot patrol downtown during the evening of Sept. 18.

He said two of three victims, including the officer, suffered “no significant injuries,” but he did not have details about the other victim’s injuries.

Jadis French, 21, of Rama First Nation, will be in Orillia court Nov. 20 for a first appearance.

She is facing two counts of assault and one count each of assaulting a peace officer, mischief under $5,000 and being intoxicated in a public place. She was released, with conditions, on a Form 10 undertaking.
