Did you know Orillia's first 'beer store' was on Front Street?

The Dominion Garage closed in 1952, paving the way for its employee, Herman Bunker, to be hired to run the old coal furnace

Herman Bunker was the first employee of the new Brewers Retail store that opened in 1952 on Front Street.

Postcard Memories is a weekly series of historic postcard views and photos submitted by Marcel Rousseau.

Some were previously published by the Orillia Museum of Art and History and in the book Postcard Memories Orillia.

In 1950 Herman Bunker was working at the Dominion Garage at 9 Front St., just south of Mississaga Street. The Dominion Garage closed shortly after and by 1952 the Brewers Retail opened its first Orillia Beer Store and district warehouse at the same location.

Because Herman knew how to run the old coal furnace with hoppers, he was hired as the first employee of the store and became a regular employee of the Brewers Retail Store.

Manager S.W. Cleverly decided they should have home delivery.

The Brewer’s Marketing in Toronto had a surplus truck, a 3 ton Ford with a custom delivery box. Arrangements were made for Herman to ride to Toronto on a transport returning empties, often taking his son Jim along for the ride.

Pictured is Herman standing in front of Orillia’s first Brewers Retail delivery truck.
