Postcards reveal idyllic summer life at The Hermitage

Resort on Pumpkin Bay was a picture of 'lovely' lake life

Postcard Memories is a weekly series of historic postcard views and photos submitted by Marcel Rousseau. Some were previously published by the Orillia Museum of Art and History and in the book Postcard Memories Orillia. Watch for it each Saturday!

The Hermitage summer resort was built by Colonel Jarvis on the south shore of Pumpkin Bay, west of Forest Avenue. It was purchased by Charles Stephens in 1885.

This early view shows the beautiful landscaping and tennis court built by Stephens. There is no date on this postcard; however, the series number from publisher R.O. Smith dates it to 1910.

During the late 1930s, Stephens’ sons expanded the resort and built nine summer cottages on the property. The buildings were torn down in 1973 for residential development.

In views two to five we see two photo postcards dated 1927 and published by Orillia photographer G. A. Brown  The message on the back of these two postcards describe the superb hospitality provided to the guest and reads:
Dear ?.
You cannot imagine what a wonderful time we are having. The table is excellent and we just “stuff”- There is no use disguising the fact, that we are just like rats, where food is concerned. The moment we smell cooking we’re hungry. This place is lovely, so attractive: and the “Lake” in front of the house, is no more than twenty-five feet away,- and last night with the moon shining on the water was a picture.
The row-boats and canoes passing up and down enhanced the effect. You would enjoy it, I’m sure. Mrs. H. goes swimming every day and revels in it. She constantly improves, but I see no signs of our getting mildewy; however “Eat and grow fat” is our motto. Hope you are having a fine time. My kindest remembrance to your family and love to your mother.

Sincerely M. V. D. H.
