Sunday School Orchestra used to hit all the right notes

In 1908, an article in the Orillia Times said the Methodist Sunday School orchestra was of 'a very high order ... and evoked loud applause' at the Opera House

Postcard Memories is a weekly series of historic postcard views and photos submitted by Marcel Rousseau.

Some were previously published by the Orillia Museum of Art and History and in the book Postcard Memories Orillia.

This photo postcard showing 15 members of the Orillia Orchestra Association on the stage of the Orillia Opera House was mailed Jan. 13, 1909 to Miss Loella Horn, Coaticook, Quebec.

Signed by “Edith” the message on the back reads: “I am sending you this picture of the orchestra Will plays in. It is the Methodist Sunday School Orchestra. I think you can pick him out.”

In the book, People in Place, compiled by Robert K. Chapman, is a photo of the Methodist Sunday School Orchestra practising in the church basement.

The book also includes a clipping from The Orillia Times, Aug. 6, 1908 stating “The members of the Methodist Sunday School orchestra are to be congratulated on the success attending their concert in the Opera House. The program throughout was of a very high order, the playing of the director, Mr. Bowen, while Miss. Swinton’s piano accompaniments left nothing to be desired. The different selections by the orchestra, who numbered 26 musicians, were rendered in a highly musically manner, and evoked loud applause.”
