The Orillia Terriers won the Allan Cup in 1973 — one of the finest hockey achievements of any team in Orillia's long history.

Postcard Memories is a weekly series of historic postcard views and photos submitted by Marcel Rousseau.

Some were previously published by the Orillia Museum of Art and History and in the book Postcard Memories Orillia.

This season for the McLean & Dickey Orillia Terriers — the city's Jr. C team — has been one of the best in many years. Tonight, the team will look to beat Schomberg to advance to the division championship.

It's a reminder of better times, when local hockey teams were among the best in the country.

Such was the case when, legend has it, young hockey fans had to be practically removed from the rafters of the Community Centre during the Allan Cup championship playoffs in Orillia in 1973.

The Orillia Terriers originated as the Orillia Pepsis in 1966, but changed their name to the Terriers in 1969.

The Terriers won the OHA Senior A playoff title in 1970 and 1973 and went on to win the Allan Cup by beating the St. Boniface Mohawks in a best-of-seven series in Orillia. It was standing room only at the Community Centre with the Terriers winning four games out of five, bringing the Allan Cup to Orillia.

The Allan Cup champs as shown are (front row, from left) John Louis Levasseur, Mike Draper, Doug Kelcher (coach), Don Stoutt (president), Al Beausoleil (manager), Tom Polanic, Grant Moore and John McWilliams.

In the centre row: Gary Milroy, Jim Keon, Ron Clarke, Jim O’Brien, Clare Alexander, Gary Marsh and Ernie Miller.

In the back row: Raymond Hollywood (stick boy), Billy Harris (assistant trainer), Ray Dupont, Garrie Vaughan, George Vail, Charlie Cipolla and Peter Lemay (trainer). Absent: Henry Monteith.

Several players from this championship team went on to play pro hockey in later years.
