Students looking to complete their volunteer hours will find a meaningful opportunity and may make some new friends with Simcoe Strong Volunteer.
The program places students in a long-term care centre where they can socialize, play cards and go for walks with senior residents, Rachel Jennings, the volunteer coordinator for the program, explained.
Jennings added that they like to tailor the volunteer experience to the student's interests and talents and could include shadowing the nursing team, helping with maintenance, or entertaining the seniors with music or art.
"We can accommodate a program specifically to that student and what they can offer," she said. "We really strive on our program being a mentorship program."
During the past three years of the pandemic, seniors were more isolated and missed out on social opportunities. Now, the program has been back since February 2022, welcoming volunteers age 12 and older who are fully vaccinated.
Jennings added that the program is an excellent way for students to build confidence in their social skills and find a genuine human connection. Some volunteers enjoy their relationships with the seniors so much that they continue to volunteer even after completing their mandatory school hours.
"And then for the seniors, it's bringing back good memories. They're learning stuff from these students, too, learning about technology. It's a mutual teaching and a mutual benefit for both of them."
The Orillia location is Trillium Manor, other areas within the county looking for volunteers include Sunset Manor in Collingwood, Georgian Village in Penetanguishene and Simcoe Village and Manor in Beeton.
