UPDATE: Distressed swimmer pulled from Balm Beach dies in hospital

Police say good samaritans rescued the swimmer and transported him to shore

UPDATE Tuesday at 10 a.m.:

Tragically, the male was pronounced deceased at hospital, his name is being withheld until it has been confirmed that the next of kin has been notified.

A post-mortem will be held in Toronto.

On Aug. 23, 2021 at approximately 5 p.m., a swimmer was a distance from the shore in the waters of Georgian Bay at Balm Beach and began showing signs of distress which attracted witnesses who attempted to help him.

The male went beneath the water however several Good Samaritans assisted in a rescue and were able to locate him, transporting him to shore on a paddle board. They then began CPR on the male in an attempt to revive him.

Members of the Southern Georgian Bay detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, the Tiny Township Fire and Emergency Service and Simcoe County Paramedic Service attended the scene and took over live saving measures.

The 24-year-old male from Toronto was transported to a local hospital and from there was flown via ORNGE helicopter to a Toronto area hospital.

Here are a few safety reminders to consider when enjoying the the final weekends of the season:

  • Supervise children in and around water. Stay within arms' reach of children under five.
  • Look before you jump. Spinal injuries are catastrophic - often resulting in paralysis. Enter the water feet first.
  • Always swim with a buddy. Most drowning victims can swim. Learn lifesaving skills so you can save yourself and help to save a buddy.
  • Wear a lifejacket or Personal Flotation Device (PFD) while on a vessel or in the water.
  • Alcohol and water do not mix. Don't drink and swim and do not operate a vessel while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
