Investigators looking into a fatal plane crash that happened Monday on Lake Simcoe have their work cut out for them.

Not much remains of the 1995 Fisher Super Koala ultralight plane that went down on Lake Simcoe, west of Lagoon City in Ramara, just before 4 p.m., killing the male pilot, who was the sole occupant.

“When the aircraft impacted the ice, there was a post-crash fire and it completely consumed the aircraft,” said Peter Rowntree, senior investigator with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB).

He said the plane hit the ice in “a nose-down attitude.”

A team of investigators attended the scene Tuesday, when the plane was removed and taken to the TSB facility in Richmond Hill.

Rowntree examined the wreckage Wednesday, but a lot of it is still wet, so he’s waiting for it to dry before taking a closer look.

“We’ll see what we can learn from what little is left,” he said, adding the extent of the damage “will certainly hinder our ability to investigate what happened.”

The TSB will be speaking with Transport Canada to get any information there might be about the aircraft and the pilot. The pilot’s family will also be contacted by the TSB.

It’s unknown how long the investigation will take.

Information about the pilot, including his name, age and where he was from, are not being released until a post-mortem has taken place. That was expected to happen Wednesday.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the incident to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
