Fire destroyed a homeless encampment near Highway 400 and Bayfield Street at around noon today in Barrie.
Flames reached into the canopy of the surrounding trees and smoked wafted toward the on-ramp nearby.
Police and fire crews could be seen at the location, which was a small wooded area making up part of the on-ramp to the highway.
No one was there when fire crews arrived on the scene.
“Two or three tents were on fire and the crews put them out,” deputy fire chief Derek Wilson said.
“It was at the on-ramp to the southbound lanes from Bayfield Street, so there was lots of access and no trouble getting there" to put the fire out, he added.
There were no injuries reported.
What caused the fire remains under investigation.
Bayfield Street and the highway's on-ramp have since reopened.
