One man has died in an apartment fire in Collingwood on Tuesday morning.
OPP officers along with the Collingwood Fire Department responded to the fire on Moberly Street shortly after 7 a.m. this morning.
“We were called to a structure fire with one male trapped inside. On scene, there was heavy smoke, but (firefighters) made their way into the apartment above the garage. The fire was out, but there was still heavy smoke,” said Collingwood Fire Chief DanThurman.
The investigation is ongoing however it has been confirmed that a 71-year-old man has died, and two others were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The name of the deceased is not being released pending next-of-kin notification.
As of 9:30 a.m., Thurman said the scene has been secured and the fire has been extinguished. The fire did not spread to the rest of the house.
“The main house was not damaged at all, and there was no exterior damage. It was contained within the apartment,” said Thurman.
Members of the Office of the Fire Marshal have been called in to investigate the blaze today. Thurman said more details on the cause of the fire may be available Tuesday afternoon pending their investigation.
“We’ll know more later this afternoon,” said Thurman.
