Man facing arson charge in connection to apartment fire in Midland

Occupants living in apartments had to be evacuated from building following the fire earlier this week, police say

Crews battle a fire at 288 King St. in Midland on March 5. A man has now been charged with arson in connection to the blaze that left several people homeless.

A 36-year-old Midland man faces an arson charge in connection to a fire at 288 King St. on March 5. 

Ontario Provincial Police officers responded with members of the Midland Fire Service to the commercial location that has apartments on the second floor. They were successful in clearing the building of all occupants with no injuries reported. The fire which broke out at about 10:26 p.m. caused significant smoke and water damage to both floors of the building, a news release said.

An investigation  began with the assistance of the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal (OFM), Midland Fire Services, OPP Forensic Identification Services (FIS) and members of the Crime Unit attached to the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment.

Scott Barry Sylvester of no fixed address has been arrested and charged with: 

  • Arson - disregard for human life
  • Break, enter a place - commit indictable offence
  • Fail to comply with probation order

The accused remains in custody and will appear at a future date before the Ontario Court of Justice.

Last month the accused was also arrested and charged after police received reports that a person on foot was throwing wooden objects and rocks at homes and vehicles in the Manly Street and Galloway Boulevard area.
