Man found sleeping in vehicle's back seat flees into field

Police say Clearview Township man was found hiding in another vehicle; Officers forced to smash window when he refused to unlock doors

On Dec. 28, 2019 at approximately 4:38 a.m., members of the Huronia West detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were conducting general patrol when an unplated vehicle was observed on the eastbound shoulder of County Road 91. 

Upon checking the vehicle, a male was observed sleeping in the backseat. During the officers investigation the male fled on foot into a field. Officers quickly determined that the male had numerous Criminal Code warrants for his arrest.

With assistance from the OPP K9 unit and Emergency Response Team, the male was located approximately one kilometre away hiding in another vehicle. Police were forced to smash the window of the vehicle as the male refused to unlock the doors. For officer safety the police canine dog was utilized to remove the wanted male from the vehicle and he was subsequently taken into custody.

21-year-old Zack Sheard of Clearview Township, Ont., was charged with:

  • Adult fail to comply with probation order CC 733.1(1)
  • Adult poss of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000 -in Canada CC 354(1)(a)
  • Adult poss of a scheduled I substance for the purpose of Trafficking - cocaine CDSA 5(2)

The accused was held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie. 

Residents are reminded to remove valuables from their vehicles when parked for an extended period of time or move them out of sight and of course, lock their vehicle doors.
