Authorities have seized drugs and other contraband at Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst.

On Saturday and Sunday, staff at the multi-level-security jail intercepted packages containing tobacco, marijuana, crystal methamphetamine, and shatter (cannabis concentrate), according to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). The total estimated institutional value of the items is $162,000.

“The Correctional Service of Canada uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These tools include ion scanners and detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors,” the CSC stated in a news release.

“CSC has heightened measures to prevent contraband and unauthorized items from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband or unauthorized items into correctional institutions.”

The CSC has a tip line for federal institutions to receive information about illegal activities, including the distribution of contraband. Those with information can provide it anonymously at 1‑866‑780‑3784.
