Police-issued firearm stolen from police vehicle: OPP

OPP say they are investigating in Angus on Sunday after a police-issued firearm, a Colt C8 rifle, was stolen from a police vehicle.

"Our priority is to recover the firearm and ensure the safety of our community," Nottawasaga OPP said in a release around 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 4. "Expect a large police presence in the area while the investigation continues."

The investigation is focused on Brentwood Road in Angus, which is about 20 minutes west of Barrie.

No other details about what happened have been released. 

The OPP is asking the public to be aware of the following:

  • The stolen firearm poses a risk to public safety. Police urge all residents and visitors to exercise caution.
  • If you encounter any suspicious activity or observe someone with a firearm, do not approach. Instead, call 9-1-1 immediately to report the sighting.
  • Members of the public are advised to avoid Brentwood Road area while the search and investigation remain ongoing.

Nottawasaga OPP asks anyone with information to contact police.

Any person with information about this situation should immediately contact 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward.

"Remember, your safety is paramount. Do not engage with any individuals associated with the stolen firearm. Report sightings promptly," OPP said in the release.

Earlier on Sunday, OPP said Brentwood Road will be closed from Commerce Road to Sandy Lane.
