‘Significant problems’: Tractor trailer crash shuts down Hwy. 400

OPP says no injuries reported; tractor trailer reportedly crossed over from southbound lanes into northbound portion of the 400

Updated on March 12 at 3:03 p.m.: If you were heading north on Highway 400 through Bradford earlier today, you had to pack your patience.

OPP closed the northbound lanes of the 400 at Highway 88 in Bradford for several hours due to a three-vehicle collision involving a tractor trailer.

Apparently, the tractor trailer was heading southbound on the 400 at about 7 a.m. when the driver of another vehicle “failed to pay attention and made an unsafe lane change, causing the transport truck to collide with the vehicle.” The tractor trailer then went through the centre median and struck a dump truck heading northbound, before entering a ditch, the OPP says.

The 41-year-old driver who allegedly initiated the incident has been charged with careless driving.

No injuries are reported at this time. However, motorists were told to expect heavy delays through the affected area.

“We have significant problems on Highway 400, north of the GTA,” Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in a post on X, the social-media platform formerly known as Twitter, Tuesday morning. “You can get back on, beyond that, at Highway 89. It will cause significant delays for people travelling between Toronto and Barrie. Southbound traffic, I suspect, will be very slow as well — but those lanes remain open.”

The tractor trailer was filled with at least 80,000 pounds of gravel, so three heavy tow trucks were called to the scene to rig the vehicle and pull it out of mud.

All northbound lanes have now reopened.
