Three charged during OPP Festive RIDE check

One from Tay Township faces impaired and possession of cocaine charges

MIDLAND, ON - Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have been busy doing their part in helping to raise the awareness for drivers to not be impaired by drug or alcohol at anytime but especially at this Festive Time of year by setting up 42 separate R.I.D.E. check stops since Nov. 22, 2019 on roadways here in North Simcoe.

Officers checked over 1600 drivers and vehicles resulting in one driver being charged for Impaired Driving and one driver receiving a three day licence suspension for registering a "warn" reading on the Roadside Screening device. The officers are participating in a Road Safety effort to reduce the incidence of impaired driving on area roadways here in North Simcoe by conducting R.I.D.E. check stops and proactive traffic patrol.

The following incidents of impaired driving were reported as a result of proactive patrol and R.I.D.E. check stops.

1) On Dec. 01, 2019 at 3:57 p.m. OPP officers were conducting a R.I.D.E. check stop on Pillsbury Drive in the Town of Midland when they spoke with a driver entering the R.I.D.E. check stop. Officers entered into a drinking and driving investigation resulting in Garth Duckett, 58 years of Midland being charged with the following Criminal Code of Canada driving offence.

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released from police custody on a recognizance to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Dec. 19, 2019. The involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days and the accused's driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days under the conditions of the Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS).

2) On Nov. 29, 2019 at 1:51 pm an OPP officer investigating a vehicle collision on a Midland Avenue, Town of Midland parking lot entered into a drinking and driving investigation with the involved driver. As a result of this investigation April Lee Mary Leduc 31 years of Midland has been charged with the following Criminal Code of Canada driving offences -

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released from police custody on a recognizance to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Dec. 12, 2019. The involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days and the accused's driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days under the conditions of the Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS).

3) At 9:03 p.m. Nov. 22, 2019 an OPP officer on traffic patrol stopped a vehicle on Peel Street in the Town of Penetanguishene for a traffic violation. The officer upon speaking with the driver entered into a drinking and driving investigation resulting in Timothy Charles Simpson 33 years of Tay Township being charged with the following violations -

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

Contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

  • Poss of a schedule I substance- Cocaine

Contrary to the Drug and Controlled Substances Act

The accused was released from police custody on a recognizance to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Dec. 12, 2019. The involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days and the accused's driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days under the conditions of the Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS).

Police remind motorists that an essential part of the enforcement job is to save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways and trails. Educating the public about safe driving practices is a priority.
