A trek across the Lake Simcoe ice Tuesday afternoon almost turned deadly for three occupants of an off-road vehicle.

On Jan. 30, at approximately 2:15 p.m., a 911 call was made from occupants of an off-road vehicle that went through the ice a "significant distance from shore," notes a media release.

OPP Aviation Services were dispatched and quickly located the individuals on the shoreline between Beaverton and Brechin through GPS coordinates.

Ramara Fire responded with their air boat to rescue the trio. Orillia OPP Const. Brett Boniface said because the off-road vehicle floated, the occupants were not directly in the frigid water.

The trio were brought safely to shore and were not injured, but Simcoe County paramedics were on the scene to help if needed, police noted in a media release.

The incident is a reminder, police stress, that no ice is safe ice.

"Please be aware of the conditions prior to heading out on the ice," notes the media release. "Consult with local experts in the area and check for up to date reports on ice thickness. Also be aware of your location and surroundings as conditions can change quickly."

Emergency responders also remind people to be cognizant of their location in case emergency support is needed, as this helps ensure assistance in a timely manner.
