Violent robbery at Forest Avenue home leads to multiple arrests

Orillia OPP say two males entered home, by force, restrained the resident, stole items and threatened the male before fleeing

Members of the Orillia detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested and charged two males and one female with numerous offences after two early morning robberies over the weekend, in the City of Orillia.

On Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020, shortly after midnight, two males entered a Forest Avenue residence, by force, and restrained the lone male resident. The two suspects proceeded to steal numerous items and threaten the victim before leaving. The Orillia OPP Crime Unit undertook the investigation, with the assistance of a Scenes of Crime Officer (SOCO), and the two suspects were identified.

On Sunday, Nov. 15, 2020, approximately 8:45 a.m., a disturbance was reported to police involving a male chasing another on Moffat Street, Orillia. Officers responded and located one of the involved males.

Witnesses then directed police to an Atherley Road apartment where the incident originated and investigators learned that a robbery had taken place involving the two suspects from the previous incident. 

A male and a female suspect were arrested at the scene and officers continued to attempt to locate the third suspect who had fled prior to police arrival. 

As a result, Richard Rider, age 33, of Orillia has been charged with:

  • Robbery with violence, contrary to Section 344(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm, contrary to Section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Break, enter dwelling house - commit indictable offence, contrary to Section 348(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Overcome resistance by attempting to choke, suffocate or strangle another person, contrary to Section 246(a) of the Criminal Code

(Nov. 15 occurrence)

  • Break, enter dwelling house - commit indictable offence, contrary to Section 348(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Robbery with weapon, contrary to Section 344(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm, contrary to Section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - cocaine, contrary to Section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

In addition, Ashlee Rusby, age 26, of Orillia has been charged with:

  • Break, enter dwelling house - commit indictable offence, contrary to Section 348(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Robbery with weapon, contrary to Section 344(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Failure to comply with release order, contrary to Section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code

Later that afternoon, officers located and arrested the third suspect at a residence that he was known to frequent.  As a result, Keith WOOD, age 27, of Severn, has been charged with:

  • Robbery with violence, contrary to Section 344(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm, contrary to Section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Break, enter dwelling house - commit indictable offence, contrary to Section 348(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Disguise with intent, contrary to Section 351(2) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of prohibited weapon, contrary to Section 117.01(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Fail to comply with probation order, contrary to Section 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Failure to comply with undertaking, contrary to Section 145(4)(a) of the Criminal Code

(Nov. 15 occurrence)

  • Break, enter dwelling house - commit indictable offence, contrary to Section 348(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Robbery with weapon, contrary to Section 344(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Uttering death threats - cause death or bodily harm, contrary to Section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - cocaine, contrary to Section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Disguise with intent, contrary to Section 351(2) of the Criminal Code
  • Assault with a weapon, contrary to Section 267(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, contrary to Section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Fail to comply with probation order, contrary to Section 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, contrary to Section 88 of the Criminal Code

All accused parties were held in custody pending bail hearings and are set to appear on Nov. 16, 2020 at the Ontario Court of Justice, Barrie.
