Wanted federal offender caught in Peterborough

Warrant issued after man breached supervision order Feb. 15; Derek Powell declared dangerous offender by Barrie judge several years ago

A federal offender wanted on a Canada-wide warrant has been arrested.

Derek Powell, 54, was wanted for breaching a supervision order when he “went unlawfully at large” on Feb. 15, Ontario Provincial Police stated in a news release.

On Wednesday, police said Powell had been arrested in Peterborough.

He is serving a long-term supervision order of seven years, six months and 16 days for assault with a weapon, two counts of threatening death and bodily harm, two counts of forcible confinement, two counts of assaulting a peace officer, mischief and four counts of failing to comply with probation order.

Powell was declared a dangerous offender by a Barrie judge more than a decade ago

Police have previously said Powell was known to frequent the Greater Toronto Area, Peterborough, Simcoe County, York Region and Durham Region.
