The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating a single-vehicle collision that occurred yesterday in Beaverton.

Preliminary information suggests that shortly after midnight on Sept. 27, 2020, a Durham Regional Police Service officer in an unmarked police vehicle was in the area of Simcoe Street and Mara Road when he observed an ATV that did not have a licence plate. In addition, the driver did not have a helmet.

The officer asked the 46-year-old driver to pull the ATV over. Instead, the driver attempted to flee and struck the curb, causing the ATV to flip over. The man was taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

At this time, three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. One subject officer and two witness officers have been designated.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
